What food do you need to cook to at least 155 degrees F?
Can you cook on an open wood fire?
If you are planning on cooking over a fire, fuel choice is more important than normal. You want to use wood that does not smoke much, give a reasonable heat and burns slowly. Hardwoods such as oak, ash and beech are best for steady heat, as they burn for a long time.
How do you season a fire pit?
Coat the grill grid or grates of your fire pit with a moderate layer of vegetable oil before its first use to season. If you have a gas fire pit, set the thermostat to 350 degrees Fahrenheit and allow it to operate for one hour.
